Ambitious emissions cuts

Helsinki has pledged to become carbon neutral by the year 2030, five years earlier than the national target. This spring, the city took a big step towards fulfilling this promise, when the city-owned power company Helen shut down its coal-fired power plant in Hanasaari. This single move cut the city’s total emissions by 20 per cent.

The most significant sources of direct emissions in Helsinki are heating, transport and electricity. Helsinki is promoting carbon neutrality with advances in energy efficient building technology, low-emission transport solutions, and renewable energy for heat and electricity production. Mayor Juhana Vartiainen wants Helsinki to take bold steps and be a forerunner in ecological sustainability on both a national and global level. The city has also produced an ambitious Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Road Map that encourages residents, businesses and city operations to consume things wisely.
